Software Specialist - SRE

About the role

ASB is looking for a Software Specialist – SRE to join its engineering squad in Albany, Auckland. The role focuses on designing, building and operating reliable cloud‑native systems that support the bank’s digital services. You will work closely with developers and product owners to embed Site Reliability Engineering practices across the platform.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop and deliver high‑quality, reliable software aligned with platform direction.
• Run and optimise cloud platforms (Azure, AKS) to ensure performance, stability and resilience.
• Implement Infrastructure as Code using Terraform, including module creation, provisioning and state management.
• Automate repetitive tasks to reduce toil and improve operational efficiency.
• Drive observability through metrics, logs and tracing tools (Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog) and maintain alerting strategies.
• Support incident response: triage, root‑cause analysis and post‑incident improvements.
• Embed SRE principles such as SLIs, SLOs, error budgets and capacity planning.
• Collaborate on solution design, technical decisions and CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions).

Required profile

• 7–10 years of hands‑on SRE/DevOps experience.
• Proactive mindset with a passion for automation and reliability engineering.
• Strong problem‑solving skills in a Linux environment.
• Ability to work effectively within an agile squad and influence engineering practices.

Required skills

• Terraform for Infrastructure as Code.
• Azure cloud services, especially Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS).
• Linux administration and Bash scripting.
• Observability tooling such as Prometheus, Grafana or Datadog.
• Kubernetes container orchestration.
• Git version control and GitHub Actions for CI/CD.
• Networking fundamentals and security basics.
