Climate Science Communications Lead

About the role

The Climate Science Communications Lead will guide how the Council shares its climate and adaptation initiatives with the public. Working closely with scientists, council teams, iwi and community groups, you will translate complex climate data into clear, engaging messages that build trust and inspire action.

Key responsibilities

• Translate technical climate science, hazard assessments, risk profiles and adaptation plans into accessible public‑facing materials.
• Develop educational resources tailored to diverse audiences, including schools, iwi and local businesses.
• Design and deliver innovative community engagement approaches on climate hazards and adaptation.
• Support citizen‑science projects and interactive tools such as the Council’s Risk Explorer.
• Collaborate with internal council departments and external stakeholders to ensure consistent, accurate messaging.
• Champion the Council’s position on climate change and natural hazards in public forums.

Required profile

• Tertiary qualification in science, communications or a related field.
• Strong project‑management abilities to deliver multiple communication products simultaneously.
• Approximately five years’ experience in climate adaptation, environmental science, natural hazards or resilience (candidates with less experience will also be considered).
• Confidence in public speaking and facilitation, with a record of leading inclusive community conversations.
• Excellent interpersonal skills to build trust and navigate sensitive topics with empathy.
