Senior Software Engineer (ASR - Edge)

Job description
About the role
Auror is a New Zealand-founded company helping retailers tackle theft and organised retail crime, and it is adding AI to its approach. This is a brand-new role for a Senior Software Engineer on the ASR (Subject Recognition) team. Auror's ASR technology runs across a global edge estate, on camera and on server, in thousands of retail stores worldwide. You will help own and evolve this edge capability, making it observable, reliable, upgradeable and supportable at scale, and develop new detection, recognition and AI capabilities.
Key responsibilities
- Build new subject recognition capabilities using off-the-shelf SDKs and third-party integrations, covering on-camera processing, in-store servers and the cloud platform.
- Build comparison harnesses and evaluation tooling to measure how new face recognition models or engine versions perform, calibrate thresholds and interpret score distributions.
- Implement observability through tracing, structured logging, metrics and alerting so support teams and customer SOC and IT teams can see into systems they cannot physically access.
- Improve the reliability and resilience of the edge estate and debug complex production issues spanning process, container, host, network and cloud layers.
- Integrate and manage third-party SDKs and hardware dependencies, diagnosing issues and working with vendors.
- Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines for artefacts deployed to physical devices.
- Work in the ASR software engineering team, primarily in .NET and C#, collaborating across product, engineering and commercial teams.
Required profile
- 5+ years of experience in software, systems or infrastructure engineering, owning production systems running on devices or infrastructure outside the company's direct control.
- Experience with containerised workloads on edge or embedded Linux devices (IoT Edge, Balena, k3s or equivalent).
- Strong debugging skills across process, container, host, network and cloud boundaries.
- Hands-on experience with observability tooling (distributed tracing, structured logging, metrics and alerting) and practical evaluation skills.
- Ability to integrate third-party SDKs and hardware dependencies into production software.
- Project leadership and communication skills, able to collaborate across Product, Engineering and commercial teams.
Required skills
- Cloud platform fluency; GCP preferred, or AWS/Azure with evidence of transferable skills.
- Familiarity with .NET and C# is ideal, or the ability to adapt quickly to a new stack.
