Job description
About the role
Auror helps retailers reduce theft and organised retail crime, and is looking for an Engineering Lead for Subject Recognition (Edge). You will lead the engineering team behind Auror Subject Recognition (ASR), shaping the technology that lets retailers detect and respond to crime in real time. A major focus is moving FaceRec Edge from pilot to reliable, multi-site production, defining what a healthy deployment looks like across cameras and on-prem servers and building the practice that keeps it reliable as it grows. The role reports to the Director of Engineering.
Key responsibilities
- Lead engineering of the on-prem face recognition platform, including edge devices, the detection pipeline and vendor model integration, and run structured sprint rituals such as stand-ups, retrospectives and planning.
- Define and own estate health: a concrete definition of a healthy deployment per camera, server and site covering detection quality and availability, made measurable and actionable.
- Help the team keep software serviceable on edge devices outside the team's control, observing changes in performance, availability and model accuracy and responding to them.
- Own the go/no-go on face recognition model generations, based on shadowed production traffic, and broker false-positive/false-negative trade-offs with Product and Trust & Safety.
- Treat accuracy regression as a reliability concern, with drift detection and a rollout/rollback path that does not require a site visit.
- Strengthen observability, incident response and escalation, with blameless postmortems, and reduce toil by shifting time from firefighting to building capability.
- Set engineering standards, guide architectural decisions toward scalable, service-oriented platforms, and coach and mentor a high-performing team.
- Eliminate single points of failure through pairing, rotation and documentation, and champion responsible, privacy-conscious engineering.
- Embed governed, agentic AI practices, championing LLMs and agentic tooling for delivery, code review and testing with guardrails and quality gates.
Required profile
- Proven technical expertise, including distributed and edge systems and cloud-native architectures (GCP preferred).
- Experience owning on-premises infrastructure that the team does not control, including sizing, patching, remote management and hardware lifecycle.
- Demonstrated experience leading engineering teams and managing performance.
- Ability to explain complex technical concepts to a variety of audiences.
Required skills
- C# and .NET Core (or newer)
- Distributed and edge systems
- Cloud-native architectures (GCP preferred)
