Hardware Solutions Firmware Engineer

About the role

Trimble is seeking a firmware engineer for its Caterpillar Trimble Control Technologies (CTCT) joint venture, based at Trimble's Christchurch headquarters. CTCT develops machine control products that combine site design information with positioning technology to semi-automatically control earth-moving machines. The role develops core firmware for compute boxes and GNSS sensors, contributing to hardware product design and manufacture.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, implement, debug, support and maintain firmware for hardware devices including compute boxes and GNSS (GPS) sensors, mainly in C, C++ and JavaScript/TypeScript within a Linux runtime environment.
• Support board bring-up of new hardware platforms through bootloader, OS, device driver and debug interface initialisation.
• Collaborate with external firmware suppliers to meet technical and schedule expectations.
• Contribute to automated unit and functional testing and work with validation and verification teams on in-field product testing.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related field.
• 3+ years of embedded firmware development experience in C, C++ and embedded Linux.
• Experience with real-time operating systems, compilers and debuggers.
• Familiarity with production environments including Jira, GitHub and CI tools.
• Strong written and verbal communication, able to speak to technical and non-technical audiences.
• Only applicants legally entitled to work in New Zealand will be considered; the role is intermediate (P2) or career-level (P3), not senior (P4).

Preferred skills

• Vehicle network technologies such as CAN, J1939 or BroadR-Reach.
• GNSS sensor knowledge.
• Functional safety standards such as IEC 61508.
• Agentic development workflows and AI-assisted coding tools.
