Ranger – Outdoor Asset & Track Maintenance

About the role

We are seeking a motivated Ranger to join the Operations team of the Department of Conservation in Palmerston North. You will work across the Manawatū District, maintaining back‑country tracks, huts and other visitor facilities while supporting conservation initiatives.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain recreational assets, tracks, huts and structures, performing carpentry, building repairs and general upkeep.
• Plan, organise and deliver scheduled work programmes and ad‑hoc tasks.
• Assist conservation management activities throughout the district.
• Promote and uphold health, safety and wellbeing standards on all work sites.
• Travel regularly, including overnight stays, and operate on‑site vehicles and tools.

Required profile

• Proven experience in asset, track and facility maintenance with practical carpentry or building skills.
• Comfort using power equipment such as chainsaws, mowers and scrub cutters.
• High level of fitness and ability to work in remote back‑country environments.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a close‑knit team.
• Full New Zealand driver’s licence and willingness to travel.
