Predator Control Ranger – Protect New Zealand Fairy Tern

About the role
Join a dedicated team of Rangers working to save the critically endangered New Zealand Fairy Tern (Tara iti). You will carry out predator‑control activities across Auckland and Northland, helping to protect breeding, nesting and feeding sites.
Key responsibilities
- Set, monitor and maintain kill‑traps and live‑capture (leghold) traps.
- Operate bait stations and conduct pesticide applications.
- Record and manage data using TrapNZ or similar GIS tools.
- Maintain and service a network of trail cameras around control sites.
- Support firearms operations and ensure safe handling.
- Maintain traplines, clear and repair equipment.
- Provide operational support to the wider conservation team as needed.
Required profile
- Ability to work independently in remote field locations.
- Full New Zealand driver’s licence and ability to drive a manual vehicle.
- Availability for occasional evenings and weekends.
- Desirable: First Aid certification, back‑country experience, 4‑WD qualification.
Required skills
- Working knowledge of DOC series, SA and leghold traps.
- Experience setting up and running bait stations with pesticides.
- Understanding of predator ecology (rodents, mustelids).
- Experience installing and maintaining traplines and trail cameras.
- Proficiency with TrapNZ or comparable GIS software.
- Firearms licence and safe firearms handling.
What we offer
- Full‑time permanent position based in the Mahurangi Warkworth office.
- Salary range $61,189 – $67,446 NZD per year, dependent on experience.
