Urgent Care Physician (SMO) – Kenepuru Hospital

About the role

Health New Zealand | Te Whatu Ora is seeking an experienced SMO Urgent Care Physician to join the Kenepuru Accident & Medical Clinic at Kenepuru Hospital in Porirua. This permanent, salaried role provides urgent care services to the local community, operating within a 24/7 roster while offering a flexible 32‑hour week and the possibility to expand to full‑time.

Key responsibilities

• Provide urgent care services to the Porirua community through the Kenepuru Accident & Medical Clinic.
• Work day and evening shifts on weekdays and weekends, covering 32 hours per week with potential to increase to 40 hours.
• Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team including doctors, nurse practitioners, charge nurse manager and practice administrator.
• Assist in reducing unnecessary emergency department presentations by delivering appropriate after‑hours care.

Required profile

• Vocational registration in Urgent Care with the Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ) or equivalent (FRNZCUC).
• Ability to obtain or maintain MCNZ vocational registration.
• Experience working in a multidisciplinary urgent‑care environment.
• Commitment to high standards of clinical care and patient safety.

Required skills

• Clinical assessment and management of urgent medical conditions.
• Proficiency in using electronic medical record systems.
