Software Engineer – Visual Effects Tools

About the role

Wētā FX is seeking Software Engineers to join its Technology & Research team in Wellington. You will develop robust, scalable tools that support hundreds of artists working on high‑profile film and television visual effects projects.

Key responsibilities

• Write scalable, maintainable code that integrates with Wētā FX custom libraries and DCC applications.
• Troubleshoot software issues and provide technical support to a wide range of internal users.
• Deliver pragmatic solutions in a fast‑paced, constantly evolving production environment.
• Collaborate with stakeholders, artists and other engineers to design and implement new features.
• Participate in coding, testing, integration and release cycles to keep production pipelines stable.

Required profile

• Strong Python development skills or equivalent experience with a similar language.
• Experience developing within DCC tools such as Houdini or Autodesk Maya.
• Familiarity with Git version control.
• Solid understanding of software engineering principles, architecture and testing.
• Self‑motivated, proactive and able to work independently in time‑critical environments.
