About the role

The Public Defence Service (PDS) in Waitakere is seeking an experienced criminal litigator to join its busy Henderson office as a Lawyer PAL2. You will provide high‑quality defence representation for legally aided clients and contribute to a collaborative, supportive team.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver expert defence advocacy across a varied criminal caseload.
• Support intermediate and senior lawyers with case preparation and strategy.
• Assist in coaching and mentoring junior lawyers.
• Maintain professional relationships with judges, peers, and the wider legal community.

Required profile

• Current PAL2 approval level and qualification to practice law in New Zealand.
• Strong passion for criminal justice and empathy for a diverse client base.
• Confidence in building credibility with courts and colleagues.
• Enthusiasm for sharing legal expertise and collaborative problem‑solving.
