Criminal Defence Lawyer (PAL2) – Public Defence Service

About the role

The Public Defence Service (PDS) in Waitakere is seeking an experienced criminal litigator to join its team as a Lawyer PAL2. Based in Henderson, you will provide high‑quality defence representation for legally aided clients and contribute to a collaborative, supportive environment.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver defence representation to legally aided clients across a varied criminal caseload.
• Manage and progress criminal matters from initial charge through to resolution.
• Support intermediate and senior lawyers and assist in mentoring junior lawyers.
• Contribute to team discussions, share legal expertise and help develop best‑practice approaches.

Required profile

• Current PAL2 approval level and a practising certificate in New Zealand.
• Demonstrated ability to build credibility with judges, peers and the wider legal community.
• Strong empathy and the capacity to relate to a diverse range of clients.
• Passion for criminal justice and a desire to develop a career in criminal advocacy.

Required skills

• Criminal litigation experience.
• Knowledge of legal aid processes and criminal procedure in New Zealand.
