Assistant Registrar

About the role

The Assistant Registrar supports the Waitangi Tribunal Unit by performing essential registrarial functions that enable the Tribunal to process Māori claims under Te Tiriti o Waitangi. This role combines legal administration, research, and drafting within a respected public‑service environment.

Key responsibilities

• Register and maintain the claims register for the Waitangi Tribunal.
• Prepare legal aid application reports and related documentation.
• Provide drafting assistance and advice on legal and procedural matters.
• Conduct legal research, critique, and analysis relevant to Tribunal jurisprudence.
• Liaise with Māori groups, organisations, and the judiciary as required.

Required profile

• LLB qualification or advanced study towards an LLB.
• Understanding of Waitangi Tribunal jurisprudence.
• Experience working with Māori groups or organisations.
• Strong organisational, planning and legal writing abilities.
• Interest in developing knowledge of Te Reo Māori and Tikanga Māori.

Required skills

• Legal research and analysis.
• Drafting of legal documents and procedural advice.
• Ability to interpret and apply Tribunal rules and legislation.
