About the role
The Assistant Registrar supports the Waitangi Tribunal Unit by performing essential registrarial functions that enable the Tribunal to process Māori claims under Te Tiriti o Waitangi. This role combines legal administration, research, and drafting within a respected public‑service environment.
Key responsibilities
- Register and maintain the claims register for the Waitangi Tribunal.
- Prepare legal aid application reports and related documentation.
- Provide drafting assistance and advice on legal and procedural matters.
- Conduct legal research, critique, and analysis relevant to Tribunal jurisprudence.
- Liaise with Māori groups, organisations, and the judiciary as required.
Required profile
- LLB qualification or advanced study towards an LLB.
- Understanding of Waitangi Tribunal jurisprudence.
- Experience working with Māori groups or organisations.
- Strong organisational, planning and legal writing abilities.
- Interest in developing knowledge of Te Reo Māori and Tikanga Māori.
Required skills
- Legal research and analysis.
- Drafting of legal documents and procedural advice.
- Ability to interpret and apply Tribunal rules and legislation.
