Software Engineer – Early Hire (Hybrid, Christchurch)

About the role

Join an early‑stage regtech in Christchurch building AI‑native software that helps regulated businesses meet AML/CFT obligations. You will work directly with the founder, shaping both the product and the engineering culture.

Key responsibilities

• Develop features from well‑defined specifications, including APIs, document processing, integrations, data workflows and user interfaces.
• Orchestrate AI coding tools, review and test generated code before it ships.
• Own end‑to‑end quality: testing, debugging, and identifying edge cases prior to production.
• Write clean, well‑bounded features with clear definitions of done.

Required profile

• 3–5 years of software engineering experience or equivalent self‑taught projects.
• Comfortable navigating unfamiliar codebases and asking clarifying questions.
• Proficient with AI coding tools and able to explain their output.
• Willingness to admit uncertainty and flag potential compliance risks early.
• Ability to work in a regulated domain with intellectual honesty.
