About the role

The Public Defence Service (PDS) is seeking an experienced criminal litigator to join its North Shore office in Albany as a Senior Lawyer (PAL3). You will provide high‑quality defence representation for legally aided clients while mentoring junior lawyers in a collaborative environment.

Key responsibilities

  • Deliver expert defence representation across a varied caseload, including high‑profile criminal matters.
  • Appear in the High Court and Court of Appeal as required.
  • Train, mentor and supervise junior lawyers, supporting their professional development.
  • Collaborate with the Office Public Defender and contribute to team strategy.

Required profile

  • Current PAL3 level listing and qualification to practice law in New Zealand.
  • Demonstrated credibility with judges, peers and the wider legal community.
  • Strong commitment to criminal justice and the values of respect, integrity and service.
  • Ability to work effectively within a supportive team and relate empathetically to diverse clients.

Required skills

  • Expertise in criminal litigation and courtroom advocacy.
  • Proficiency in managing complex case files and legal research.
