Principal Communications Advisor – Regional Development

About the role
The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) is seeking a Principal Communications Advisor to join the Regional Development & Commercial Services Group in Central Wellington. You will support high‑profile communications around regional investment, government procurement and property management, working within a small, collaborative team.
Key responsibilities
- Develop and deliver communications strategies for major regional development funding announcements and procurement milestones.
- Manage media relations, including reactive media handling and issues management.
- Provide advice to senior leaders, Ministers’ offices and project teams on risk and messaging.
- Produce clear, compelling written content such as press releases, briefing notes and stakeholder updates.
- Collaborate with MBIE’s broader communications function to ensure consistency and leverage expertise.
Required profile
- Proven experience at principal advisor level in complex, high‑visibility environments.
- Strong track record of working with Ministers’ offices and senior government officials.
- Excellent judgment, strategic thinking and ability to work quickly on multiple projects.
- Demonstrated ability to build credibility with senior leaders and external stakeholders.
Required skills
- Advanced writing and editing skills for strategic communications.
- Expertise in media and issues management.
- Experience advising on risk and communications planning.

- 12‑month fixed‑term contract with a salary range of $118,390–$143,639 NZD.
