Clinical Nurse Specialist - Emergency Department

About the role

Wellington Regional Hospital's Emergency Department is a Level 6 emergency service providing acute and emergent care within a multidisciplinary team. It is looking for a Clinical Nurse Specialist (Nurse Educator) to mentor nurses at all stages of their career, from new graduates to those moving into advanced areas such as resuscitation or triage. The role also involves leading lectures and workshops during structured study days. The department is a mixed adult-paediatric unit (about 20% children) with around 65,000 annual presentations, and includes a 16-bed observation unit, a Minor Care Zone and a paediatric zone.

Key responsibilities

• Mentor and support nurses, including new graduates and those transitioning into the Emergency Department or into advanced areas such as resuscitation or triage
• Lead lectures and workshops as part of structured study days
• Deliver a hands-on, adult-learning approach that encourages innovation, critical thinking and practical application

Required profile

• At least 4 years of experience in a Level 6 tertiary Emergency Department, or a minimum of 3 years in critical care settings such as a medical-surgical HDU or ICU
• New Zealand postgraduate nursing master's degree, or working towards it
• Extensive clinical experience in emergency nursing and a postgraduate qualification in nursing
• Experience managing diverse, high-acuity presentations across adult and paediatric populations
• Strong leadership, interpersonal and clinical judgement skills, able to make swift decisions in high-pressure situations
• Commitment to safe, culturally appropriate, person/whanau-centred care and to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi
