Apprentice Mechanical Engineer – Studholme

About the role

Fonterra is offering a fully funded 4-year (8,000-hour) apprenticeship in mechanical engineering at its Studholme site in Canterbury. The apprentice earns a New Zealand Certificate in Mechanical Engineering (Maintenance) while working alongside experienced tradespeople in a large-scale manufacturing environment. The contract is fixed-term and full-time, Monday to Friday, 40 hours per week.

Key responsibilities

• Maintain, troubleshoot and improve critical equipment that keeps operations running safely and efficiently
• Handle equipment breakdowns and fault diagnostics
• Carry out preventative, corrective and shutdown maintenance
• Take part in maintenance planning and scheduling
• Work with mechanical motors, pumps, valves and rotating equipment, site utilities such as boilers, welding, fabrication and vibration analysis
• Learn highly automated manufacturing processes, robotics and modern technologies used at New Zealand's largest dairy manufacturing sites

Required profile

• NCEA Level 2 with Maths and English, or a relevant pre-trade qualification (or in the process of achieving it)
• Interest and aptitude for practical, hands-on engineering work
• Enjoys solving problems and learning new skills
• Comfortable working with different people and in varied environments
• Holds, or is working towards, a Restricted Driver Licence by the start of the apprenticeship
• New Zealand citizen, Australian citizen or New Zealand permanent resident, aged 16 or older
