Support Worker - Tauranga

About the role

IDEA Services, New Zealand's largest provider of services to adults with intellectual disabilities, is hiring a full-time Support Worker in Tauranga. You will help people with intellectual disabilities achieve their goals, build independence and take part in the activities that matter most to them. The role involves varied rostered shifts, including sleepovers and wakeovers, and offers the chance to earn while learning nationally recognised qualifications.

Key responsibilities

• Help people recognise and respond to emotional overwhelm.
• Support growth in independence and learning of daily living skills such as using public transport, getting a job and cooking a meal.
• Aid management of daily routines: toileting, showering, dressing, taking medication and eating.
• Encourage pursuit of goals, interests and hobbies, and healthy lifestyle choices.
• Help maintain strong connections with whānau and community.

Required profile

• Previous experience in support work, caregiving or personal care is preferred but not essential; varied life experience and the right attitude are key.
• Ability to stay calm under pressure and support people with complex needs and behaviours.
• Positive attitude, willingness to learn and ability to build meaningful relationships.
• Availability to work shifts across mornings, evenings, sleepovers and weekends.
• Full physical fitness to provide necessary physical support.
• Full New Zealand driver's licence and the right to work in New Zealand.

Required skills

• Comfortable and proficient with computers and tablets on a daily basis.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.

• Pay of $24.68 to $30.13 per hour depending on qualifications, with the ability to earn more as you gain them.
