Freelance Materials Engineer & Python AI Trainer

About the role

We are looking for a Materials Engineer with strong Python expertise to design and evaluate computational material‑science challenges for a cutting‑edge AI model. The work is project‑based, freelance and fully remote, allowing you to contribute to AI testing while deepening your knowledge of specialised scientific tools.

Key responsibilities

• Design computational material‑science problems that require a specialised solver (e.g., ObsPy, MITgcm, flopy/MODFLOW, etc.) and produce verifiable answers.
• Develop a reference Python solution, prepare input data and define domain parameters.
• Set numerical targets and tolerance levels, then test the problem against the AI model in parallel runs.
• Iteratively calibrate difficulty to achieve a pass rate of roughly 10‑30 %.
• Collaborate with senior reviewers to ensure task quality before final submission.

Required profile

• Degree in Materials Science or a related discipline.
• At least 2 years of research, applied or teaching experience.
• Proficient in Python for scientific programming.
• Fluent written English (C1 level or higher).
• Experience with, or willingness to quickly master, at least one of the following packages: ObsPy, instaseis, pyrocko, MITgcm, xmitgcm, flopy/MODFLOW, GeoPandas.
