Design Manager - Preconstruction (Auckland or Christchurch)

About the role

Apollo Projects, a nationwide design and build commercial construction company, is growing its Preconstruction team and is looking for a Design Manager. The role sits in the preconstruction phase, managing the design process from early client engagement through to detailed design and consenting. It can be based in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) or Ōtautahi (Christchurch).

You will work closely with estimators, project managers, quantity surveyors, consultants and internal subject matter experts to make sure designs are practical, buildable, well-coordinated and aligned with client and commercial objectives.

Key responsibilities

• Work with clients to develop and refine project briefs
• Coordinate and manage consultants to deliver high-quality, accurate design
• Review design drawings, identify risks and challenge solutions where needed
• Drive and coordinate the tender process
• Coordinate and develop design and feasibility reports
• Negotiate and develop contracts (NZ3910, NZ3916)
• Collaborate with construction teams to align design with delivery

Required profile

• At least 3 years' experience managing design delivery in commercial construction
• Strong understanding of building design in a design and build environment
• Proactive, organised and personable, able to engage with a wide range of stakeholders
• Experience in civil engineering or electrical design is preferred but not essential

Required skills

• Working knowledge of MS Office, including SharePoint
• Excellent written and verbal communication and relationship-building skills
• Accuracy, quality control and commercial awareness of scope, risk and value
