Intermediate Solicitor – Legal Advice & Advocacy for Children

About the role

We are seeking an Intermediate Solicitor to join Oranga Tamariki – Ministry for Children. In this fast‑paced position you will provide legal advice and advocacy to social workers and other staff, ensuring the best outcomes for children and their whānau.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver timely legal advice to social workers, managers and external partners.
• Represent Oranga Tamariki in court, conducting litigation in family or youth‑justice matters.
• Collaborate with community organisations and Māori iwi to develop culturally appropriate solutions.
• Travel to court sites (approximately four nights per month for Christchurch‑based staff) and attend regional meetings.
• Maintain accurate case files and legal documentation.

Required profile

• Admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor in New Zealand with a current (or eligible) practising certificate.
• Minimum three years post‑qualification experience in family law, criminal (youth justice) law or a related field.
• Commitment to the wellbeing of children, Māori treaty obligations and ongoing cultural competence development.
• Strong communication, written and digital skills; honest, transparent and a collaborative team player.
• Valid driver’s licence and willingness to use Ministry vehicles for regional travel.
