Criminal Defence Lawyer (PAL1) – Public Defence Service, Hamilton

About the role

We are seeking an experienced criminal defence lawyer (PAL1) to join the Public Defence Service in Hamilton. The role offers a varied caseload of legally‑aided criminal matters and the chance to work within a supportive, collaborative team dedicated to high‑quality advocacy.

Key responsibilities

• Provide high‑quality defence representation to legally‑aided clients across a range of criminal offences.
• Manage a diverse caseload, from initial charge to trial and sentencing.
• Support intermediate and senior lawyers through case preparation, research and mentorship.
• Engage with judges, peers and other legal professionals to build credibility and uphold the service’s standards.

Required profile

• Current PAL1 approval level and admission to practice law in New Zealand.
• Strong commitment to criminal justice and the values of respect, integrity and service.
• Ability to relate empathetically to a wide range of clients and stakeholders.
• Confidence in courtroom advocacy and developing professional relationships.

Required skills

• Legal research and case analysis.
• Oral and written advocacy in criminal proceedings.
• Case management and documentation.
