Transport Designer

About the role

We are expanding our in‑house capability and are looking for a Transport Designer to join the Transport Engineering team at the Christchurch City Council. This hybrid design position moves concepts through to practical, buildable transport layouts, directly influencing city projects such as intersection upgrades, traffic calming, and bus priority schemes.

Key responsibilities

• Develop road, intersection and transport layout designs at feasibility and concept stages, aligned with Austroads standards.
• Produce high‑quality CAD drawings and scheme plans using Microstation or AutoCAD.
• Assess vehicle swept paths and spatial requirements with tools such as AutoTURN.
• Identify design options, risks and constraints to support project decision‑making.
• Collaborate closely with engineers, project managers and stakeholders to refine designs.
• Manage multiple requests and priorities in a fast‑paced environment.

Required profile

• Proactive, collaborative designer who enjoys solving complex transport problems.
• Strong technical capability with confidence to contribute ideas and challenge thinking.
• Ability to interpret survey, mapping or GIS data into practical design solutions.

Required skills

• Advanced experience with AutoCAD or Microstation.
• Proficiency in AutoTURN for vehicle swept‑path analysis.
• Knowledge of Austroads standards for road and transport design.
• Computer‑Aided Design (CAD) expertise.
