Staff Engineer - Java

About the role

Join one of New Zealand's largest technology shops at ANZ, where you will help modernise the Internet Banking backend platform. As a Staff Engineer you will combine deep Java expertise with technical leadership, working closely with frontend and services teams to deliver customer‑facing experiences.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the design and implementation of new features on the Internet Banking Backend Platform using Java.
• Drive discovery and innovation for RESTful API and event‑driven solutions.
• Work with databases, data stores and secure customer identity and access management systems.
• Participate in code reviews and make technical design decisions.
• Establish engineering principles and standards based on industry best practice.
• Collaborate with architects, product owners, external vendors and other stakeholders.
• Promote platform uplift, stability and resilience.
• Maintain delivery pipelines and support continuous delivery.
• Contribute to the engineering and platform digital strategy and roadmap.
• Mentor and coach other engineers in an agile environment.

Required profile

• 12+ years of experience building enterprise applications with Java.
• Strong understanding of software development principles and microservices architectures.
• Proven technical leadership with a track record of influencing technical direction.
• Ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly.
