Solicitor or Intermediate Solicitor (Legal role)

About the role

You will provide legal advice and advocacy services to social workers and other staff within Oranga Tamariki, focusing on achieving positive outcomes for tamariki and their whānau. The position involves significant courtroom litigation as well as extensive community collaboration.

Key responsibilities

• Provide legal advice to social workers and other team members.
• Conduct courtroom litigation on behalf of Oranga Tamariki.
• Collaborate with community partners to support tamariki and their families.
• Travel within the region using Oranga Tamariki vehicles to attend meetings and court appearances.
• Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of family and youth justice law.

Required profile

• Admitted as a Barrister and Solicitor in New Zealand with a current (or eligible) practising certificate.
• For the Intermediate Solicitor level, at least 3 years post‑qualification experience in a relevant area of law.
• Commitment to the wellbeing of tamariki and to honouring treaty commitments to Māori.
• Willingness to develop cultural competence in Te Ao Māori.
• Clean driver’s licence for regional travel.

Required skills

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong digital literacy for legal research and documentation.
• Understanding of tikanga Māori and Pacific peoples’ cultural practices.

• Salary range starting between $77,886 and $86,082 for Solicitor level and $90,429 to $100,000+ for Intermediate level.
