Legal Counsel – Office of the Chief District Court Judge

About the role

The Office of the Chief District Court Judge in Wellington is seeking a Legal Counsel to provide expert, fit‑for‑purpose legal advice and support to the Chief District Court Judge. The role ensures that the decisions and operations of the District Court have a sound legal basis and contributes to the orderly and efficient conduct of the court’s business.

Key responsibilities

• Provide well‑researched, legally accurate advice to the Chief District Court Judge and the District Court Judicial Leadership team on strategic, constitutional and operational matters.
• Lead the development of complex legal advice, overseeing high‑risk projects to ensure robustness and timeliness.
• Drive continuous improvement of legal frameworks, methodologies and processes to enhance consistency of advice.
• Instruct counsel when the District Court is a party in senior court proceedings.
• Mentor and support Judges’ Clerks, fostering a supportive learning environment and ensuring high‑quality research.

Required profile

• A recognised law degree with a commitment to ongoing professional development.
• Admission as a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand and a current practising certificate.
• Eight to ten years of post‑qualification legal experience, including expertise in constitutional and judicial administration matters.
• Proven ability to provide intellectual and professional leadership and to mentor junior staff.

Required skills

• In‑depth knowledge of New Zealand’s constitutional framework and the District Court’s statutory framework.
• Strong legal research and analytical skills.
• Experience in drafting and reviewing legal advice and instructions to counsel.
