Lecturer / Senior Lecturer in Statistics

About the role

The School of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Canterbury is seeking a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer in Statistics. This permanent, full‑time position will support high‑quality teaching, research, and community engagement across on‑campus, online, and offshore programmes.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver research‑informed teaching across the statistics curriculum, both in‑person and online.
• Lead curriculum design and innovation to improve student experience, retention and graduate outcomes.
• Secure external research funding and enhance the School’s scholarly profile.
• Supervise and mentor postgraduate students.
• Develop a strong personal research programme in statistics or a related field.
• Build collaborative research links within the university, industry, and international networks.
• Contribute to service, outreach and leadership activities that promote an inclusive, collegial culture.
• Participate in the joint education programme with Qufu Normal University in China.

Required profile

• PhD (or equivalent) in statistics or a closely related discipline.
• Demonstrated commitment to inclusive teaching and learning.
• Evidence of a growing or established research portfolio in statistics.
• Experience in mentoring, supervision or academic leadership.
• Understanding of the Treaty of Waitangi and New Zealand’s bicultural context.
• Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work across diverse communities.
• Commitment to equity and inclusion, especially supporting women and under‑represented groups in STEM.
