Turf Manager

About the role

The Horowhenua Team is seeking a Turf Manager to lead a dedicated crew of ten turf specialists, mower operators, and facilities staff on the 6:30 am – 3:00 pm shift. Reporting to the Operations Manager, you will oversee two 1st Class sports venues—Levin Domain and Donnelly Park—and ensure their playing surfaces meet the highest standards.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and mentor a team of ten, maintaining a hands‑on approach to daily operations.
• Coordinate with the Horticulture, Cemeteries, Response, and Spraying Team Manager to share staff and equipment efficiently.
• Plan, schedule, and adapt daily sports‑field maintenance tasks based on weather and field conditions.
• Perform hands‑on cricket pitch maintenance during summer, working with natural‑grass and synthetic pitches.
• Maintain strong communication with Horowhenua District Council and local sports clubs to meet stakeholder requirements.
• Arrange servicing and repair of the fleet under your care, ensuring equipment reliability.
• Provide training, coaching, and performance feedback to develop a high‑performing team.

Required profile

• Proven leadership experience in turf or sports‑field management.
• Level 4 turf qualification covering multiple playing surfaces (soccer, rugby, softball, etc.).
• Full, clean NZ driver’s licence with manual transmission capability.
• Strong organisational, planning, and administrative abilities.
• Positive safety mindset and ability to motivate staff.
