Trainee Train Controller

About the role

KiwiRail is looking for a motivated Trainee Train Controller to join its Train Control team in Wallaceville, Upper Hutt. This entry‑level position offers a fast‑paced environment where no two days are the same, supporting the safe movement of freight, scenic and commuter trains across New Zealand.

Key responsibilities

• Monitor and coordinate train movements on the rail network, ensuring safety is the top priority.
• Communicate clear instructions to train crews, maintenance teams and other stakeholders.
• Apply KiwiRail’s rules, regulations and procedures to maintain safe operations.
• Respond to incidents and operational changes, making quick, informed decisions.
• Support the growing Passenger Metro Rail Services in Auckland and Wellington.

Required profile

• Strong safety mindset with an understanding of operational risk.
• Excellent communication skills and the ability to give concise instructions.
• Customer‑focused attitude with experience handling diverse stakeholder needs.
• Self‑driven, able to work independently and thrive under pressure.
• Positive attitude, high work standards and a commitment to learning.
