Senior Transport Planner

About the role

The Senior Transport Planner will provide senior technical expertise and project leadership across multiple transport planning initiatives for Hamilton City Council. Reporting to the People Manager – Strategy & Planning Specialists, you will shape integrated, evidence‑based transport solutions that link land use, growth and mobility.

Key responsibilities

• Lead and contribute to transport planning across major programmes such as Access Hamilton / Ara Kootuitui Kirikiriroa and the Hamilton‑Waikato Metro Spatial Plan.
• Provide expert advice on transport strategy, policy and integrated land‑use planning.
• Build and maintain strong partnerships with central government, regional partners, iwi and internal stakeholders.
• Represent the Council in regional working groups and infrastructure forums.
• Influence decision‑making through evidence‑based analysis and clear communication.
• Act as a subject‑matter expert supporting strategic planning and Council‑wide outcomes.
• Contribute to procurement and management of consultancy services.
• Engage with the community and translate complex information into clear insights.

Required profile

• 8+ years of experience in transport planning or a related field.
• Relevant tertiary qualification (or equivalent experience).
• Strong capability in integrated transport planning and strategy.
• Proven ability to work collaboratively with government agencies, iwi and community groups.
• Excellent analytical, communication and stakeholder‑engagement skills.
