Senior Rural Generalist Medical Officer

About the role

The West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island is seeking a Senior Rural Generalist Medical Officer to join a multidisciplinary team delivering high‑quality care across a broad clinical scope. Key responsibilities

• Provide primary, urgent, and emergency care to a dispersed rural population.
• Deliver general medicine, paediatrics, orthopaedics, and obstetrics/gynaecology services.
• Collaborate with in‑house specialists and regional partners for comprehensive patient management.
• Maintain equitable, high‑level care standards in a remote hospital setting.
• Participate in community health initiatives and support local health infrastructure.

Required profile

• Vocational registration (e.g., FDRHMNZ or FRNZCGP) and eligibility for NZ Medical Council registration.
• Interest in or progress toward dual fellowship (generalist and specialist).
• Experience as a Senior Medical Officer or equivalent, preferably within rural or multidisciplinary teams.
• Commitment to serving a small, isolated community.

Required skills

• Clinical competence across primary care, emergency medicine, general medicine, paediatrics, orthopaedics, and obstetrics/gynaecology.
• Ability to obtain and maintain registration with the New Zealand Medical Council.
