Senior Management Accountant

About the role

The Senior Management Accountant will join Downer’s Energy & Utilities – Water NZ finance team, supporting a portfolio of complex, high‑value water infrastructure projects across New Zealand. Reporting to the Head of Finance – Water NZ, the role provides technical accounting expertise, drives financial discipline and delivers insights that influence operational and strategic decisions.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare accurate and timely management reports, including month‑end close, variance analysis and performance insights.
• Support budgeting and forecasting processes for project and operational portfolios.
• Partner with project and operational leaders to monitor financial performance, WIP, margins and cost control.
• Analyse financial data to identify risks, opportunities and improvement initiatives.
• Contribute to audit processes, compliance requirements and continuous improvement of financial systems and processes.

Required profile

• Commercially minded finance professional with a proactive approach.
• Tertiary qualification in Accounting, Commerce or related field, CPA/CA qualified.
• 7+ years’ experience in management accounting, project accounting or a similar role.
• Strong experience in budgeting, forecasting and financial analysis within a project environment.
• High attention to detail and strong communication and stakeholder‑engagement skills.
