Senior Legal Counsel – Regulatory (Transport)

About the role

NZTA is seeking an energetic and strategic Senior Legal Counsel to join its Regulatory legal team. The role supports the agency’s purpose of delivering a safe, fair, and sustainable land transport system across New Zealand.

Key responsibilities

• Provide clear, practical legal advice on complex regulatory matters affecting land transport.
• Interpret legislation and develop solutions that align with business outcomes.
• Build trusted relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders.
• Collaborate with legal and subject‑matter experts to drive innovative approaches.
• Prioritise competing demands and manage a diverse workload to meet organisational goals.

Required profile

• Minimum 5+ years post‑qualification experience (PQE) in a regulatory or commercial legal environment.
• Strategic thinker with a growth mindset and ability to see beyond immediate issues.
• Strong communication and relationship‑building skills.
• Current New Zealand Law Society practising certificate.
• Commitment to Te Ao Māori, Te Tiriti o Waitangi and an inclusive workplace.
