Rural Generalist – Senior Medical Officer

About the role

The Rural Generalist Senior Medical Officer will join the West Coast Rural Generalist Team, delivering high‑quality, comprehensive health services to a dispersed community of 32,500 residents. You will work across primary, urgent, emergency, general medicine, paediatrics, orthopaedics and obstetrics/gynaecology, providing equitable care in a challenging but rewarding rural environment.

Key responsibilities

• Provide clinical care across a broad scope, including primary, urgent, and emergency services.
• Manage general medicine, paediatric, orthopaedic and obstetric/gynaecological cases.
• Collaborate with in‑house specialists and external partners to support local care and tertiary transfers.
• Contribute to community health initiatives and rural health education.
• Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings and continuous professional development.

Required profile

• Vocational registration (e.g., FDRHMNZ or FRNZCGP) with an interest in dual fellowship.
• Eligibility to obtain registration with the New Zealand Medical Council.
• Commitment to rural practice and ability to work independently in a remote setting.
• Strong collaborative attitude within a multidisciplinary team.

Required skills

• Clinical competence across primary care, emergency medicine, general medicine, paediatrics, orthopaedics, and obstetrics/gynaecology.
• Ability to adapt to a wide range of medical scenarios in a rural hospital.
