Protection & Automation Project Engineer

About the role

Transpower's Grid Development Protection & Automation Project Engineering teams contribute to its investment programme and customer connections by providing project engineering input on high-voltage transmission projects, from early scoping through design review, technical risk management and commissioning. Opportunities are open in Auckland, Wellington or Christchurch.

Key responsibilities

• Shape project scopes, review outsourced design deliverables, provide technical advice, refine design standards and support commissioning
• Investigate, model and assess the performance of power system protection schemes under different grid configurations and power flows
• Work with project managers, consultants, technicians and internal stakeholders to define practical technical solutions
• Review design deliverables and contribute to project scopes, cost estimates and business cases
• Support updates to protection scheme settings, technical guidance, standard packages and continuous improvement initiatives
• Evaluate new digital and networking technologies and alternative designs

Required profile

• At least 3 years' experience in HV Protection & Automation design, settings, implementation, commissioning or related project delivery in electricity transmission, distribution or generation
• Practical understanding of transmission assets, secondary systems and reliable grid operation
• Electrical or power engineering degree (Washington Accord accredited) or equivalent, with a willingness to grow expertise
• Ability to build relationships across internal and external teams and deliver compliant technical outputs
• Existing eligibility to work in New Zealand

Required skills

• Familiarity with tools such as PowerFactory, Python, IEC 61850, DNP3, SEL, Siemens or GE platforms
• Collaborative approach to working with technical and project stakeholders
