Mental Health Nurse – Community Support (Auckland)

About the role

This permanent, full‑time position provides high‑quality, person‑centred mental health support to individuals experiencing distress, addiction, homelessness and social disadvantage. Working within Te Tāpui Atawhai’s integrated service model at the Calder Health Centre, you will build therapeutic relationships and collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to improve wellbeing and recovery.

Key responsibilities

  • Assess, plan, implement, monitor and evaluate residents/whānau health needs.
  • Provide specialist mental health advice and support alongside Auckland City Mission teams.
  • Contribute to effective discharge planning and referrals to health‑care providers and support agencies.
  • Identify clinical risk situations and take appropriate action.
  • Continuously monitor and improve service systems, methods, efficiency and quality.

Required profile

  • Current registration with the Nursing Council of New Zealand (RN, RPN or RCpN) and a valid Annual Practising Certificate.
  • Demonstrated commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the Mission’s values of Manaakitanga, Atawhai, Rangapū, Mana Tika and Mana Ōrite.
  • Established relationships with community mental health teams, including forensic and inpatient services.
  • Empathy and understanding of the impacts of colonisation, trauma, mental health, addiction, poverty, food insecurity and homelessness.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a team.
  • Minimum two years of mental health nursing experience.

Required skills

  • Comprehensive mental health assessment (formal and informal).
  • Clinical risk identification and management.
  • Discharge planning and referral coordination.
  • Therapeutic relationship building.
