About the role
The Employment Relations Consultant will join Auckland Council’s ER team to influence strategic employment relations decisions and enhance the Council’s ER processes. Reporting to the ER Manager, you will work closely with people leaders and employees to ensure fair, consistent handling of cases across the organisation.
Key responsibilities
- Provide clear, pragmatic advice on disciplinary actions, conflict management, investigations, performance issues and restructures.
- Inform people leaders and stakeholders of solution options, associated risks and best practices.
- Gather evidence, coordinate with stakeholders and maintain accurate case records.
- Actively manage open cases to timely resolution.
- Coach and develop people‑leaders’ capability in ER processes.
Required profile
- Experienced employment relations professional with strong knowledge of New Zealand employment legislation, case law and contemporary practice.
- Sound judgement, pragmatic approach and confidence to advise in complex, sensitive situations.
- Excellent written and verbal communication, strong interpersonal skills and ability to build credibility with leaders.
- Resilient, adaptable and solutions‑focused, thriving in a dynamic environment.
Required skills
- Understanding of NZ employment legislation and case law.
- Experience managing investigations, disciplinary processes and complex case management.
- Ability to coach and develop people‑leaders in ER matters.
