Consultant Psychiatrist – Inpatient Unit (Te Whare Ahuru)

About the role

This is an exciting opportunity to join the multidisciplinary team at Te Whare Ahuru, the 23‑bed acute inpatient mental health unit at Hutt Hospital. As a Consultant Psychiatrist you will provide evidence‑based care to inpatients and help shape the future of mental health services, including the upcoming Sir Mark Dunajtschik Mental Health Centre.

Key responsibilities

• Perform comprehensive psychiatric and risk assessments for admitted patients.
• Lead medical care, including prescribing, monitoring medications, and managing co‑existing physical health conditions.
• Collaborate closely with nurses, psychologists, occupational therapists, social workers and support staff to ensure holistic patient care.
• Mentor medical students, junior doctors and other team members.
• Coordinate discharge planning with multidisciplinary colleagues and community services.

Required profile

• Qualified Consultant Psychiatrist with experience in acute inpatient mental health settings.
• Demonstrated ability to lead a clinical team and provide mentorship.
• Strong commitment to patient‑centred, culturally safe care.
