Communications Technician – Inside Plant (Low Voltage)

About the role

Ventia is looking for an Inside Plant Communications Technician to support critical power network infrastructure in Christchurch. The role focuses on low‑voltage power systems and communications equipment within controlled environments, ensuring reliable operation of essential services.

Key responsibilities

• Install, commission and test low‑voltage DC power systems, including battery testing and maintenance.
• Deploy and commission transmission technologies such as OTN, MPLS, SDH and PDH.
• Test and commission inside‑plant communications equipment.
• Perform fault finding and troubleshooting on both communications and DC power systems.
• Install, splice and terminate copper and fibre‑optic cabling.
• Interpret and update technical drawings, diagrams and schematics.

Required profile

• Proven experience in critical infrastructure, power or telecommunications environments.
• Ability to work safely at heights and in confined spaces.
• Physical fitness for ladder work and manual handling.
• Collaborative mindset with a strong commitment to safety.
• Electrical registration is an advantage but not mandatory.

Required skills

• Low‑voltage DC power system installation and commissioning.
• Battery testing and maintenance procedures.
• Knowledge of OTN, MPLS, SDH and PDH transmission systems.
• Fibre‑optic splicing and termination.
• Copper cabling installation, splicing and termination.
• Interpretation of technical drawings and schematics.
