Communications Manager

About the role

The Stratford District Council is seeking a Communications Manager to lead the development and delivery of its communications strategy. You will shape how the council tells its story, engages the community, and supports internal and external audiences across a range of channels.

Key responsibilities

• Define and implement a cohesive communications strategy for all council platforms, including media, digital, social and community outreach.
• Produce clear, consistent messaging that explains council initiatives and their impact.
• Manage media relations, press releases and crisis communications.
• Oversee internal communications to ensure staff are informed and aligned.
• Collaborate with senior leaders to advise on communication approaches for complex issues.
• Integrate Treaty of Waitangi principles and Te Ao Māori values into communications where appropriate.

Required profile

• Relevant tertiary qualification in communications, marketing or a related field.
• Proven experience leading communications functions and developing successful campaigns.
• Ability to translate technical or detailed information into clear, audience‑focused messages.
• Comfort advising senior leaders and navigating sensitive community issues.
• Commitment to diversity, inclusion and partnership with Mana Whenua.

Required skills

• Strong written and verbal communication.
• Experience with media relations and digital/social platforms.
• Strategic planning and campaign development.
