Turf Manager

About the role

Reporting to the Operations Manager, you will lead a dedicated team of 14 turf specialists and mower operators. This hands‑on position focuses on delivering high‑quality turf surfaces for sports fields across Hastings and surrounding areas while exceeding client expectations.

Key responsibilities

• Collaborate with the Horticulture, Arboriculture, Response and Spraying Team Manager to share staff and equipment efficiently.
• Monitor workflow and regimes for mowing, line marking and renovation activities.
• Plan and adjust daily sports‑field maintenance tasks according to weather and field conditions.
• Perform hands‑on cricket pitch maintenance during summer alongside the Turf Trainee.
• Maintain strong communication with Hastings District Council to meet all statutory requirements.
• Engage with park stakeholders, sports clubs and regional associations to understand and address their needs.
• Arrange servicing and repair of the fleet under your care to ensure smooth operations.
• Provide training, coaching and performance development for all team members.

Required profile

• Proven leadership experience in a similar turf or sports‑field environment.
• Approachable, decisive and able to inspire confidence in the team.
• A Level 4 turf qualification covering a range of playing surfaces (soccer, softball, rugby, cricket, etc.).
• High work ethic with willingness to work on the tools when needed.
• Full, clean NZ driver’s licence with manual transmission capability.
• Strong organisational, planning and workload‑management skills.
• Excellent written, computer and administration abilities.
• Ability to motivate the team and promote a safety‑first culture.
