Teacher of the Deaf – Fixed‑term (Terms 3 & 4 2026)

About the role

We are seeking a dedicated Teacher of the Deaf to join our team at Tawa College for a full‑time fixed‑term appointment covering Terms 3 and 4 of the 2026 school year. The role involves working closely with Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) students, delivering high‑quality instruction and supporting their individual learning journeys.

Key responsibilities

• Plan and deliver curriculum for small cohorts of DHH learners using NZSL, spoken English and other communication modes.
• Adapt and differentiate teaching approaches to meet diverse learning needs.
• Design and apply appropriate assessment tools to monitor progress.
• Collaborate with Teacher Aides and specialist staff to provide a wrap‑around support model.
• Participate in team meetings and contribute to the continuous improvement of Deaf education practices.

Required profile

• Qualified New Zealand Teacher of the Deaf or a registered teacher with in‑depth knowledge of the New Zealand Curriculum.
• Prior experience working with DHH students is desirable.
• Legally entitled to work in New Zealand.
• Commitment to attaining or maintaining proficiency in New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL).

Required skills

• Proficiency in NZSL or a strong willingness to acquire it.
• Ability to differentiate instruction and use specialised assessment tools for DHH learners.
