Senior Advisor Communications

About the role

The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) in New Zealand is seeking a Senior Advisor Communications to join its Wellington office. This full‑time fixed‑term position runs until 31 May 2028 and involves partnering with business groups, especially the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms team, to communicate complex environmental work across multiple channels.

Key responsibilities

• Partner with business groups to advise on reputational risks and identify communications opportunities.
• Develop and deliver internal and external communications for EPA projects and stakeholder engagement.
• Enhance awareness of EPA priorities through proactive storytelling and media outreach.
• Manage media issues, respond to enquiries, train spokespeople, and maintain positive media relationships.
• Create media releases and seek media opportunities.
• Contribute to EPA publications, from e‑newsletters to corporate documents.
• Simplify complex technical subjects for diverse audiences across various communication channels.
• Support digital communications, including the external website, intranet, and social media.
• Provide communications advice to the Board Chair, Chief Executive, and Executive Leadership Team.

Required profile

• Minimum 5 years of experience in a senior communications role.
• Proven ability to translate technical and scientific information into clear, engaging content.
• Experience advising senior leaders and managing media relations.
• Strong storytelling skills and ability to work collaboratively with subject‑matter experts.
