Principal Adviser – Language Capability

About the role

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) is seeking a Principal Adviser to lead its Language Capability initiative. In this hands‑on role you will shape policy, implement programmes and drive continuous improvement of foreign‑language skills across the New Zealand foreign service.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the implementation of the language capability initiative, translating strategic intent into practical delivery.
• Develop and maintain a comprehensive language capability dataset to support workforce planning and investment decisions.
• Provide programme leadership, setting clear expectations for managers and staff participating in language training.
• Identify opportunities to improve value for money and achieve efficiencies across language capability investments.
• Prepare progress reports for senior leaders and governance groups.
• Establish and manage the Language Capability Investment Group and other key stakeholder relationships.

Required profile

• Expert knowledge of language capability development principles and practice.
• Strong understanding of adult learning, capability development and organisational learning.
• Demonstrated ability to translate strategic intent into practical delivery.
• Highly developed analytical and problem‑solving skills.
• Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills.
• Ability to influence senior stakeholders and build trusted relationships.
• Relevant tertiary qualification in education, languages, organisational development, human resources, adult learning or a related discipline.
• Understanding of the Treaty of Waitangi and its application within the New Zealand public sector (beneficial).

• Competitive total remuneration ranging from NZ$129,969 to NZ$175,835 inclusive of KiwiSaver contributions.
• Fixed‑term contract until 30 June 2027 with the possibility of extension.
