Lecturer or Senior Lecturer – Defence & Security Studies

About the role

The Centre for Defence and Security Studies at Massey University’s Wellington campus is seeking a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer. The successful candidate will join a vibrant, internationally respected academic community, contributing to teaching, research and engagement on defence and security issues.

Key responsibilities

• Deliver high‑quality teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.
• Develop and enhance curriculum, including new modules and interdisciplinary content.
• Supervise postgraduate research students and support their scholarly development.
• Conduct impactful research, publish in peer‑reviewed journals and present findings publicly.
• Engage with external stakeholders such as government agencies, defence organisations and industry partners.

Required profile

• Completed PhD in a relevant discipline (e.g., intelligence studies, security studies, international relations).
• Developing (Lecturer) or established (Senior Lecturer) research record with peer‑reviewed publications.
• Demonstrated commitment to high‑quality university teaching and curriculum development.
• Strong communication skills and willingness to collaborate with a broad range of stakeholders.

Required skills

• In‑depth knowledge of intelligence theory and practice, including structured analytical techniques.
• Familiarity with emerging security technologies, AI applications to security, or related research strands.
• Ability to integrate interdisciplinary perspectives such as area studies, resource, energy or economic security.

• Competitive salary range of $86,113 – $152,711 per annum.
