Graduate R&D Software/Firmware Engineer

About the role

ABB is looking for a Graduate R&D Software/Firmware Engineer to join its Global R&D Centre in Napier, Hawke’s Bay. You will contribute to innovative technologies and solutions that help industries run leaner and cleaner.

Key responsibilities

• Contribute to R&D projects as a reliable team member, delivering quality software and firmware.
• Apply technical expertise to solve problems and meet targets for quality, time, scope and cost.
• Identify, propose and implement innovative technologies, software and solutions.
• Collaborate with the R&D team, staying up‑to‑date with emerging trends and applying cutting‑edge advancements.
• Support the achievement of assigned targets and raise/mitigate risks.

Required profile

• Master’s or Bachelor’s degree in Information Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Embedded Systems or a related field.
• Passion for teamwork, innovation and continuous learning in a dynamic engineering environment.

Required skills

• Proficient in C, C++, Python and Assembler.
• Firmware development for embedded industrial applications, including Embedded Linux.
• Experience with Azure DevOps, CI/CD pipelines, Git, build systems and unit testing.
• Familiarity with cyber security concepts and industrial communication protocols such as Modbus, Ethernet/IP, IEC61850, Profibus and CAN bus.
• Use of debug probes and oscilloscopes.
