Director of Legal, Risk and Compliance

About the role

Te Wānanga o Aotearoa is seeking a senior leader to establish and steer its newly created Director of Legal, Risk and Compliance function. The role will shape how legal, risk and compliance perspectives support the institution’s kaupapa Māori‑based mission and strategic aspirations.

Key responsibilities

• Provide strategic legal advice to senior leadership and the Board, ensuring decisions align with statutory and regulatory requirements.
• Develop, implement and monitor a comprehensive risk management framework that is proactive and culturally grounded.
• Lead compliance programmes, audit processes and governance initiatives across the organisation.
• Represent the institution in high‑level external legal and regulatory matters.
• Embed values‑led assurance practices throughout all operational areas.

Required profile

• Extensive experience in legal, risk or compliance roles, preferably at executive level.
• Proven ability to operate confidently in board and senior‑management environments.
• Demonstrated integrity, trust‑building skills and authentic engagement within a kaupapa Māori context.
• Strong judgment, clarity in handling complexity and a passion for purpose‑driven work.
