Community Guardian (Hapori Kaitiaki) – Te Matawai

About the role
The Hapori Kaitiaki (Community Guardian) is the first point of contact for tenants, visitors and the wider community at 139 Greys Avenue, a 276‑unit supported‑housing complex in central Auckland. Working on a 24/7 rotating roster, you will help create a safe, welcoming environment and support residents’ social and health needs.
Key responsibilities
- Provide frontline assistance, information and referrals to tenants and visitors.
- Monitor the site, respond to incidents and de‑escalate emotional situations.
- Collaborate with on‑site Lead Support Provider, Kāinga Ora teams and external agencies.
- Maintain accurate records of interactions and follow‑up actions.
- Participate in night shifts and other rostered hours as required.
Required profile
- Proven experience supporting individuals with complex housing or wellbeing needs.
- Ability to recognise emerging issues, stay calm under pressure and know when to seek external support.
- Strong observational and analytical abilities to understand underlying causes of resident concerns.
- Experience working with diverse cultural groups and a commitment to an inclusive environment.
- Willingness to work rotating day and night shifts.
Required skills
- First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Safety Intervention or De‑escalation training (or willingness to obtain).
