Chief Operating Officer

About the role

A Hamilton-based New Zealand business is entering a phase of growth across New Zealand and Australia and is looking for an experienced Chief Operating Officer. The COO takes ownership of the day-to-day internal operations so the CEO can focus on strategy, growth and external relationships. This is a broad, hands-on leadership role covering operations, people, technology, systems, performance and risk.

Key responsibilities

• Work closely with the CEO and take ownership of the day-to-day operation, ensuring all parts of the organisation work together effectively.
• Lead the Heads of Department, building a stronger leadership team with clear accountability, good communication and the confidence to make decisions.
• Improve systems, processes and reporting, including implementing and adopting new technology, and increase visibility of performance so the business uses its data better.
• Oversee people, finance, compliance, health and safety, risk and operational performance, keeping leadership capability and infrastructure in step with growth.

Required profile

• Proven experience leading a complex operation and a team of leaders.
• Strong commercial judgement and business acumen.
• Track record of building leadership capability and accountability.
• Experience leading significant systems, ERP or CRM implementation or change.
• Background in transport, logistics, hospitality, technology, professional services, retail, manufacturing or other customer-focused businesses.
